Not every career path is linear. For some professionals, growth means exploring new roles or new organizations altogether. But occasionally, that journey leads them back to where they started, coming back with a new perspective.
That’s the case for Christian Kelley, Executive Director of Compliance at Spectrum Health Systems. After spending years with the organization, he left to pursue new opportunities only to return with a clearer understanding of what sets Spectrum apart.
Starting with Curiosity and Staying for the Challenge
Christian joined Spectrum in 2016 as a Quality Improvement Manager after years of working with at-risk youth in outdoor therapeutic and wilderness programs. At the time, the move represented a shift in pace and a chance to take on something new.
He was drawn to the opportunity to step away from the demands of being constantly on call, while still staying in a field he cared about. Just as importantly, he connected with the people and found the work exciting and challenging.
Over time, his role evolved significantly. As organizational needs shifted, he moved into compliance, eventually becoming a team of one responsible for ensuring Spectrum meets licensing, accreditation, and regulatory standards.
Leaving to Grow and Hitting a Ceiling Elsewhere
After several years at Spectrum, Christian began thinking about what was next.
“I’m always looking for where I can add value and keep learning,” said Kelley. That mindset ultimately led him to pursue an opportunity outside of Spectrum.
However, the experience didn’t align with what he was hoping to find. Instead of being empowered to make an impact, he found himself in an environment where change was limited, and new ideas were consistently pushed aside.
“I can’t operate in a box,” said Christian. “That just doesn’t work for me.”
The Moment That Made Him Reconsider
The turning point came unexpectedly during a routine phone call from a former colleague at Spectrum. What started as a quick question turned into a reminder of what he had left behind.
Around the same time, he began to reassess where he could make the greatest impact and recognized an opportunity to return to Spectrum in a way that aligned more closely with his strengths. He reached out to reconnect, and within weeks, those conversations turned into an opportunity.
What Stood Out After Coming Back
Returning gave Christian a new perspective on what sets Spectrum apart. The most immediate and lasting takeaway was the strength of the people across the organization. He describes a consistent level of professionalism and commitment, from leadership to frontline staff, that creates a more supportive and effective working environment.
“There’s such a strong pool of talent here,” said Christian. “People who are consistent, fair, positive, and genuinely invested in the staff and the patients.”
That consistency, combined with a shared sense of purpose, is what makes the organization stand out for Kelley. Rather than operating in silos, teams are aligned around a common goal, which reinforces accountability and collaboration.
A Different Perspective the Second Time Around
Coming back to Spectrum also brought a deeper appreciation for aspects of the organization that may not have been as visible the first time.
Experiencing another environment provided a clearer point of comparison, highlighting the team’s quality and the organization’s direction. Christian points to a growing emphasis on continuous improvement, driven by leadership’s willingness to test new approaches and evolve.
That includes a focus on making processes more effective for patients as well as staff, an approach he sees as directly connected.
“When you make things better for staff, it naturally improves things for patients,” said Kelley.
With strategic initiatives underway and a broader cultural shift in progress, he sees Spectrum as an organization that is established and actively evolving in tandem.
Why Leaving isn’t Always the End of the Story
For Christian, leaving Spectrum was part of his professional development.
Sometimes, stepping away creates the perspective needed to fully understand what an organization offers. And in some cases, it can lead to returning with a stronger sense of purpose and a clearer sense of how to contribute.
For those considering a role at Spectrum, his experience points to an organization that values growth and is willing to evolve.
