Spectrum Health Systems Awarded Virginia Department of Corrections Contract

Published On: April 12th, 2022

Spectrum Health Systems, Inc., a not-for-profit organization providing a comprehensive continuum of addiction treatment throughout Massachusetts and recidivism reduction programming for justice-involved individuals throughout the country, has been awarded a new contract from the Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) to provide a range of substance use disorder treatment programs at eight VADOC facilities.

“We are fortunate to have established a strong partnership with the Virginia Department of Corrections which has allowed us to expand our programming over the years, increasing our services from two facilities in 2015 to eight facilities in 2022,” said Christopher Petrozzi, Spectrum Health Systems’ Chief Organizational Development Officer. “Our team remains dedicated to working with the DOC to continue to address the needs of returning citizens with trauma-informed, gender specific evidence-based interventions and services.”

The new contract with VADOC includes a variety of substance use disorder treatment programs involving two therapeutic community programs, four community corrections alternative programs, one work center program, and one work release program. Spectrum Health Systems was one of the first providers in the country to adapt the therapeutic community model to substance using justice-involved individuals. Modified therapeutic community programs provide an intensive cognitive behavioral learning environment with heavily reinforced principles for right living that support identity transformation and lifestyle change.

Spectrum Health Systems’ correctional treatment division was established in 1993 to provide specialized, person-centered, trauma-informed treatment to criminal offenders with a history of substance use disorders and criminal behavior.

Over the past 29 years, Spectrum Health Systems has developed extensive expertise in screening, assessment, and treatment for justice-involved individuals. Spectrum’s programs have consistently demonstrated significant reductions in recidivism and improved client outcomes, according to numerous independent evaluations and studies.
